Are you a dab hand with radars? Got prior experience supporting our armed forces? Happen to be an EW pro who wants to get stuck into a fascinating systems development project? Mission driven? For your sake, keep reading, as you might like this one…
Before waxing lyrical about the work you’ll be doing and the company / team you’ll be a part of, let’s start with what you can expect to receive, and how you can expect to be treated:
- A base salary around the $130k - $170k mark, aligned with your experience and suitability (superannuation atop these base figures).
- Free on-site parking (some won’t care about this but to others, it’ll be a dream come true).
- Extended sick leave – if you’re unwell, for goodness’ sake take the time you need to recover and don’t sweat the work stuff.
- Extra parental leave – this is a genuine family first environment, and it shows.
- While some of your work has to be done on secure networks, you’ll be afforded flexibility to WFH within Canberra where appropriate – most people tend to come into the offices as it’s actually a fun, relaxed place to be, but do what you’re comfortable with so if that means you’re at home in your onesie, cool.
- A very vocal culture recognition and thanks – the good work that you deliver is going to get publicly acknowledged, and it’s going to come right from the top.
- An environment where work-life balance really, truly is emphasised, and expected.
- A culture where clock watching doesn’t exist, and nobody gives a monkey’s when you start or finish.
- There will also be cake. No, really. Cake!
So, what will you actually be doing? First and foremost, you’ll be living and breathing radars and signals intelligence – prior exposure to this is critical. You’ll also be rubbing shoulders with defence personnel from a specific branch, hence you’ll need to be able to speak with them on their level. You’ll be chatting client requirements and communicating that back to your 6-7 EW teammates and the broader business (many of whom are veterans). You’ll play a big role in translating both the tech and non-tech requirements.
As a Product Owner, you’ll wear many different hats. Engineering tasks? Sure. Keeping on top of cost and schedule? Yes. Managing various stakeholders and their expectations? Indeed. You get the picture. This’ll be an interesting role as while you’ll sit squarely in the EW / radar / SIGINT / RF realm, your varied day-to-day tasks will keep you on your toes.
It must be said that you’ll be working with, and reporting into a real winner of a Team Lead. That’s tough to qualify but trust us on this. Your future boss happens to be a highly educated individual who knows their space inside out, but who’s also very “human.” Zero shade, but they’re absolutely not an academic robot (you know the types). Instead, they’re someone who’ll give you personality, understanding, fairness, and autonomy, with a touch of humour. You’ll learn from this person and become a sharper operator yourself because of it.
So, what does this lean and mean EW team do? They play with cool tech and deliver even cooler projects. They intelligently and creatively use ML within the EM warfare space. They tinker with both hardware and software – often very bespoke. They work with classified systems and solve supremely challenging electrical and RF problems for their clients. Non-communication-based RF systems is a current flavour. They develop very novel technologies. The work is mission driven, it’s focused, yet it’s done so in a relaxed environment where you’re treated like an adult.
What’s this business all about, and what do they do? This is a business whose sole purpose is servicing, protecting, and innovating for Australia’s most critical interests.
This business designs, builds, delivers, and plays with complex and cool tech/tools – always with security in mind – across various spaces like comms systems, wireless tech, cyber security, warfare, mobile solutions, databases, networks and so, so much more.
Please believe us when we say this is supremely interesting stuff, and you won’t get bored. You’ll be pushing the boundaries of what AI/ML can be used for in order to speed up, refine, iterate and secure immensely important things which safeguard our nation.
To succeed in a role like this, what skills, experience and attributes will you require? - You’ll know your way around radar. This is imperative – think pulse word descriptors and intelligence mission data for quantify radar signals.
- You’ll need to be a SIGINT pro: comms frequency, comms power, waveform of radio, encryption, etc., etc.
- You’ll have a good grasp of radio frequency (RF) development, tools and design.
- You’ll need to be an Aussie citizen based physically in Canberra (if you happen to hold an active clearance, great).
- If you have a clearance, great, but this is a nice to have, not a necessary. AU citizen is a must, however, as you’ll be supported to gain a clearance if you don’t already have one.
- Experience will always trump formal qualifications but if you’ve picked up a uni degree in something relevant like electrical engineering, telcommms engineering or something similar, fantastic.
- Another nice to have would be exposure to digital signals processing (DSP).
- You’ll need to confident, but not cocky. Given the military personnel you’ll be interacting with, speaking with assuredness will hold you in very good stead.
- You’ll need to be someone who can genuinely work well with others – moody island types won’t work in this role – as you’ll be chatting with electrical engineers one day, software devs the next, RF SME’s after that, etc., etc.
